CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Campaign Overview
Since 1993, the Anguilla National Trust has provided an unparalleled national heritage preservation service to the government and people of Anguilla, regional and international partners, researchers, universities and a wide range of other stakeholders. Recognised as the island’s foremost authority on heritage preservation, the Anguilla National Trust has achieved an extraordinary level of excellence in a broad number of fields. As we move through this new millennium and enter a new era of the Organisation, it is now time to ensure that the Anguilla National Trust has the ability to sustain its reputation of excellence and achieve even greater success.
This campaign seeks to raise US$400,000.00 to support all areas of national heritage preservation. Half of these monies will implement projects aimed at biodiversity conservation, cultural heritage preservation and organisational development of the Organisation. The other half will go towards the creation a National Heritage Endowment. The income generated from this endowment will be allocated for organisational development needs and will forever contribute to the overall development of the Anguilla National Trust.
Throughout this site, you will learn about the goals for each component of the campaign and the opportunities to give within each area.
Please Note: As the Anguilla National Trust prepares to meet the challenges of the 21st century, we know that the generosity of supporters and friends of the Trust will make the difference in our success. We want to ensure that our donors benefit from making a gift to the Organisation, and there are many ways to give that can improve a donor’s financial and tax situation. While employees and representatives of the Anguilla National Trust may not provide specific tax or legal advice to donors or prospective donors, the staff dealing with the Campaign may provide general non-binding information regarding potential tax and legal implications of proposed gifts. We also recommend that you seek professional legal and/or tax consultation as needed.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
When I decided to return to the Anguilla National Trust in 2004 to serve as its third Executive Director, I did so because I had a vision for the Trust. I saw an Organisation already one of the best by many standards – poised to move into a new realm of national heritage preservation. I saw an organisation ready to become one of the very finest National Trusts in the Caribbean region, one that could measure itself favourably against the standards of the finest conservation agencies of any kind anywhere, not just those with origins similar to our own.
I also saw in the Anguilla National Trust an institution that could build on its many strengths and continue to do what it has done so remarkably well throughout its proud history: focus on the preservation of Anguilla’s national heritage not just for this generation, but for the many generations to come. The Anguilla National Trust is remarkable not just because of what it has been able to achieve, but because of what it has achieved with comparatively limited human, financial and institutional resources. The truth is that the Trust has done more with less than perhaps any other organisation of its kind in the Caribbean region.
How have we done this?
- By being resourceful and dedicated.
- By setting high standards and having expectations that exceed our finances.
- By understanding that we are a very unique Organisation, we have a very special mission and by realising that what we do makes a real difference in what happens in Anguilla, the Caribbean and the world.
As we envision the future of the Anguilla National Trust, our challenge is to guarantee that we do continue to make a difference, that we can exercise a critical influence in helping to balance national development with environmental conservation, and that the Organisation is adequately equipped to address the needs of our increasingly complex, small island developing state.
The irrefutable fact is that Anguilla needs an Organisation and an entity that will truly be able to ensure that the island’s natural, social, cultural, historical and archaeological heritage is safeguarded. That is where we come in.
Anguilla needs the Anguilla National Trust.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Since 1993, the Anguilla National Trust has provided an unparalleled national heritage preservation service to the government and people of
Anguilla, regional and international partners, researchers, universities and a wide range of other stakeholders. Recognised as the island’s foremost authority on heritage preservation, the Anguilla National Trust has achieved an extraordinary level of excellence in a broad number of fields. However, we can do more.
In order to continue providing Anguilla, the region, its various partner agencies and other stakeholders in Anguilla’s development with information, technical expertise, and services, the Anguilla National Trust needs the resources to ensure it achieves its commitment to sustainable national development and national heritage preservation. Thus we ask you to support "The ANT ALIVE Campaign." The goals of the campaign are simple:
- Implement more national heritage preservation projects
- Attract and keep qualified technical staff
- Improve the work of the Trust
- Build our membership base and
- Advance our scope to address crucial areas of our mandate
The reasons people embrace and support the work of the Anguilla National Trust are as numerous and diverse as the donors themselves. Whether it’s one inspired moment or many culminating in the desire to give to the Organisation, one thing is certain: your generosity is a measure of our success.
We welcome your questions and invite you to read the next few pages. You will see the many areas of the Anguilla National Trust’s work you can impact with your gifts and the ways in which you can give. Come join us as we ensure the Anguilla National Trust remains alive through this new millennium.

OUTRIGHT GIFTS
Outright gifts are gifts that the Anguilla National Trust may be able to utilise immediately.
Cash
Outright gifts of currency, checks, wire transfers, or payroll deductions are credited at actual cash value. A cash gift allows donors who are United States citizens an income tax deduction.
Securities
The Trust welcomes gifts in the form of publicly traded stocks and securities. Marketable bonds or other securities that will mature are acceptable as gifts, regardless of maturity date. The Trust requires that the value of the donated securities be at least $500 on the date of delivery. Donors wishing to give securities that are valued at less than $500 are encouraged to sell them and to donate the proceeds. Stock in closely-held or private corporations is accepted in certain cases, after review by the ANT Council, our Legal Counsel and the
Anguilla Community Foundation. Under appropriate circumstances, a gift of stock made by United States citizens results in both a charitable deduction and avoidance of capital gain taxes on any appreciation in its value.
Property
Gifts of property are encouraged if the gift is consistent with the mission and vision of the Anguilla National Trust and the Trust will be able to utilise it as Open Space or realise a financial gain from receipt of the gift. The Anguilla National Trust reserves the right not to accept gifts that will increase the Organisation’s operating costs. Gifts of property likely to have immediate utility may include: real property close or contiguous to the Anguilla National Trust facilities and/or properties vested to the Trust by the Government of Anguilla; property of national heritage interest such as papers, books, manuscripts, or archival materials, films and video tapes, pieces of fine art; donated services or gifts of environmental, historical, archaeological, cultural or scientific value, operating supplies or computer software; and equipment such as computers, business machines, scientific equipment or other equipment useful in the operation of the Anguilla National Trust.
PLANNED GIFTS
Planned giving involves the irrevocable transfer of an asset to the Anguilla National Trust and it can be a very attractive giving strategy for many donors. Typically, a gift of highly appreciated assets is made while the donor retains the income from those assets for his or her lifetime.
Bequests
A bequest is a gift that a donor makes to the Anguilla National Trust in his or her will or trust. The donor can decide on the terms by which the bequest will be paid. This is the simplest way to make a planned gift.
Charitable Gift Annuities
A charitable gift annuity is a contractual agreement between the Anguilla National Trust and a donor. In this circumstance, the donor transfers money or property to the Organisation in exchange for a promise to pay an annuity to the donor or to other named beneficiaries for a specified period of time.
Charitable Lead Trust
When a donor establishes a charitable lead trust, the Anguilla National Trust receives income from assets for a period of time, and the assets are transferred either back to the donor or to his or her children or grandchildren at the end of the specified gift period. This can be a significant estate and gift tax planning technique in transferring substantial assets to children and grandchildren. This technique is especially attractive in transferring assets which are currently undervalued due to market pressures, but which have significant appreciation value. Creating a charitable lead trust necessitates an understanding of split interest deduction rules and related tax implications, and therefore the donor should seek professional advice.
Life Insurance
A donor may name the Anguilla National Trust as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, designating the
proceeds to be paid to the Organisation upon the death of the insured. A donor may also buy a policy for the benefit of the Organisation and name the Anguilla National Trust as the beneficiary. Policies may be written that provide an income tax deduction for the premiums paid (if person is a
United States citizen).
Remainder Interest in a Residence or Parcel of Land
This technique allows a substantial gift to be made to the Anguilla National Trust at the death of a donor (or a donor and spouse) by gifting the remainder interest in a real estate property after the donor's (or donors') death. This technique can result in a sizable income tax deduction while assuring the donor use of the property for life.
